Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Jesuit Catholic university in the country. What began as Georgetown College, a small gathering of 12 students and a few teachers, has now become an international university with nine colleges.
This institution is located in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC, where it has a 42-hectare campus with 54 buildings, mostly Gothic and Georgian. These include residences to accommodate 80% of students and sports facilities. Georgetown also has a secondary campus in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, home to the Faculty of Law, and facilities in Florence (Italy), Alanya (Turkey) and Doha (Qatar).
The Jesuit tradition of the center promotes spiritual unrest, civic commitment and the religious and cultural plurality of the university. The students obtain a world-class educational experience focused on the formation of the person through exposure to different faiths, cultures and beliefs. In fact, Georgetown, in addition to having Catholic priests, was the first American university to hire a magnet and has a rabbi and a Hindu priest.
The list of diplomats and politicians from Georgetown is very remarkable. Important personalities have passed through its classrooms, such as former US President Bill Clinton, King Felipe VI of Spain, former President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durão Barroso and King Abdullah II of Jordan. This is due to the high prestige of its Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, which is considered one of the best in the world in international relations.
