Redbone  caught the attention of conventional music fans when  Bob Dylan  saw him perform at the 1974 Butterfly Folk Festival in Ontario. Several months later,  Dylan  spoke about him in an interview with Rolling Stone. ”  Leon  interests me,  Dylan said   . “I heard he’s between the ages of 25 and 60, I’ve been [a foot and a half away from him] and I can not say, but you have to see him, old  Jimmie Rodgers does , then he turns around and makes a  Robert Johnson  .”

Redbone  got a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records, and made his recording debut in 1976 with  On the Track  , which featured legendary jazz violinist  Joe Venuti  and singer-songwriter  Don McLean  . His follow-up of 1977,  Double Time  , even reached the lists of the top 40 of EE. UU., Largely thanks to his frequent appearances on Saturday Night Live television.
